In the most recent issue of Thurston County (Washington) Chamber of Commerce VOICE Magazine, partner Melanie Seelig spoke extensively on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on businesses and offered guidance for companies looking to integrate AI tools into their work.
Asked about the top issues companies should consider when incorporating AI into their operations, Seelig maintained that “the key is for businesses to be thoughtful.” She suggested having an appointed gatekeeper who could monitor how the company is utilizing AI tools and provide trainings for employees on appropriate uses. Seelig also explained the spectrum of risks associated with AI and emphasized that the specific applications of AI tools correlates to the risk level for businesses.
To ensure ethical and legal compliance, Seelig suggests that businesses seeking to implement AI tools should proceed with caution and understand their specific risks. She also stressed the importance of adopting clearly defined policies around the use of AI in the workplace and said companies should “always have a human review generative AI output to check for accuracy and bias.”
Seelig closes by noting that since the AI landscape remains new, there is a lack of regulations on its use by businesses. “We are in the early stages of figuring out how to handle this technology,” she said, “and staying on top of policy considerations is crucial.”
