Court grants summary judgment win to Amazon.com, Inc. in dispute related to natural language processing patent
IRVINE, Calif., March 25, 2024 – Last week, a U.S. District Court granted summary judgment to Amazon.com, Inc. in a long-running dispute related to the natural language processing used by Amazon’s Alexa devices. A team from Knobbe Martens represented Amazon throughout the matter.
In 2018, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and CF Dynamic Advances LLC sued Amazon, alleging that Amazon’s Alexa products infringe a patent originally filed by RPI. In her March 18, 2024 opinion, U.S. District Judge Brenda K. Sannes ruled that the claims of the asserted patent are directed to an abstract idea and “contain no inventive concept,” and are therefore not eligible for patent protection. Judge Sannes held the patent invalid and granted Amazon’s request for summary judgment.
